China in the Global South - Something New or Borrowed?

Sun, August 23, 10:30am to 12:10pm, TBA

Abstract

How do we assess China's growing role in the Global South? Should we look at the issue from the lens of dependency theory or possibly see it as just another version of neocolonialism? It it possible that it is something altogether different? This paper examines these issues through the case study of the Caribbean Island of Dominica where Beijing pledged and provided aid and investment totaling close to a third of the country's GDP.
