Legitimacy Work in Emergence of New Organizational Forms: The Case of Tanpinar’s Time Regulation Institute

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to combine the institutional work (Lawrence and Suddaby, 2006) and the organizational legitimacy (Suchman, 1995) concepts in the form of “legitimacy work” in the emergence of new organizational forms. We offer a new framework to integrate two concepts and explore the institutional work of institutional entrepreneurs in gaining and maintaining legitimacy for their establishment over the story of Tanpinar’s (1961/2013) The Time Regulation Institute. Preliminary findings show that the institutional entrepreneur uses all kind of legitimacy work together and simultaneously, and the emphasis on the political and cultural legitimacy work is higher than the technical legitimacy work. The main contribution of this study is to show the relationship between different legitimation types and institutional work in the emergence of organizational level institutions by acknowledging the interdisciplinary collaboration of organization and literature.
