Abstract

How ought we to conceptualize relations between institutions as obligatory aspects of “getting by and getting along in established social settings,” and patterns of meaning in social life? By reconstructing the false binary between the sociological analysis of strategies, class, and power, on the one hand, and culture and meaning on the other, in terms of efficacy and intelligibility, this false binary can be overcome in ways useful for both theoretical synthesis in sociology, and applied theory in empirical sociological work.
