Twenty years after his death, we celebrate some of the many contributions of Irving Kenneth Zola that enriched disability studies and medical sociology. Cross-cutting themes include speaking with the voice of personal bodily experience and reclaiming humanity and personhood in multiple social contexts, including the clinical encounter. We consider also our collective response to unfinished paradigmatic challenges he outlined, stemming from feminist and disability rights agendas and from global imperatives associated with aging populations.
