Abstract
The papers in this session feature micro-sociological analyses of the various ways that people employ cultural tools - narratives, bureaucratic classifications, schemas - to generate meanings "on the fly." In taking into account the contingent nature of these moments of cultural creation, we learn more about how the generation and deployment of meanings can have important consequences for group boundaries, occupational practices, individuals' identities, and relationships with the state.
