Abstract

Social demographers most often receive their PhDs in programs that are tied to a population research center. Yet after their degree completion, many end up securing employment at colleges and universities without such a center and without access to many of the resources those centers provide, including senior colleagues with demographic expertise, grant preparation assistance, regular colloquium, and training opportunities. This transition can sometimes bring questions and confusion about how to stay “tied” to and be successful in the demographic scholarly world. This roundtable will bring together scholars who were trained in PhD programs that were tied to a pop center but who are currently or were previously employed in a sociology program at a university without a pop center or who are considering employment at a college or university without a pop center. The objective of the roundtable is to provide suggestions and strategies for navigating your way at a university without a population research center, including how those strategies may vary depending upon your goal (e.g., tenure, securing grants, publishing in demographic journals, transitioning to a different university). We encourage participation by scholars at all levels (graduate student, junior, mid-career, and senior).
