About Annual Meeting
Latin American Jews are the fastest growing recent Jewish immigrant group in the US, and are the subject of a growing body of research. Noted for their presence in New York, Los Angeles, and San Diego, Latin American Jews’ largest settlement is in Miami, the major American city with the largest fraction of foreign-born persons as well the largest fraction of foreign-born Jews, “Hispanic Jews” make up about 15% of the local Jewish population. Latin American Jews are in many ways socially, culturally, economically, ideologically and religiously distinct from the vast majority of US Jews, who trace their origins to Eastern Europe, as well as to the burgeoning, non-Jewish Latin-American-origin population of the US. This paper addresses the experience of Latin Americans Jews who have entered the US since 1959, with special emphasis devoted to entrants who have arrived since 2000.
