About Annual Meeting
This article explores schooling in a youth prison with attention to unpacking race and gender
identity-making. The school structure and youth-adult interactions are central for this project. The prison school was coopted by the prison priority with control which emphasized that
students perform idealized femininities of submission and obedience. This factor directly
impacted the race and gender identities of the students. Still, students crafted complex versions
of masculinities that harmonized hardness and goodness.
