Fighting the Damaging Effects of Globalization through Cultural Hybridization: The Case of Buddhist Peace Fellowship

Sat, August 20, 10:30am to 12:10pm, TBA

Abstract

Buddhist Social Movements are often seen as movements that use Buddhist principles in order to achieve their goals. On the other hand Buddhist Social Movements are seen as not representing Buddhist thought at all and actually bringing in a fourth turning of the Dharma wheel, creating something new. I will argue, using the example of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship, that (at least some) Buddhist Social Movements are a cultural hybrid and this hybridization makes for the creation of something new.
