Symbolic Boundaries with Catholicism at an Immigrant Latino Christian Church

Sat, August 20, 10:30am to 12:10pm, TBA

Abstract

Latino Protestants in the United States often experience their religious identity as a conversion. For many, the background is a cultural Catholicism. Inculcating religious adherents with a strong sense of religious identity requires distinguishing between Catholicism and other forms of Christianity. These symbolic boundaries have a moral valence, capturing the emotional life of congregants. Rhetorics against Catholicism among Latino Protestants are learned and fomented in congregational settings.
