The Pitfalls of Panethnicity: Ethnic, Spatial, and Class Stratification Amongst Latinos in New York City

Sun, August 21, 8:30 to 9:30am, TBA

Abstract

Between 2000 and 2010 New York City’s Dominican and Mexican populations have experienced incredible expansion. These trends significantly offset a shrinking Puerto Rican population, and the Latino population increased notably. Settlement patterns in each of the five boroughs reveal a divergent experience as well, with better-off Latinos concentrated in the more suburban counties of New York City, and poorer Latinos experiencing persistent poverty in more urban counties. Furthermore, the counties immediately surrounding the city in both New York and New Jersey evidence significant demographic shifts and stratification within each subgroup throughout the region. These findings illustrate the need to reassess the validity of the panethnic “Hispanic” typology, given the immense diversity of experience within it.
