Amalgamated Trends: Program and Policy Implications for the Aging Male Inmate Population

Sat, August 20, 10:30am to 12:10pm, TBA

Abstract

Within the last four decades, prisons in the United States have undergone a steady increase in the inmate population. A growing inmate population contributes to a considerable increase of aging inmates. Accommodating the needs of aging inmates presents disproportionate financial strains and institution-level program and policy concerns on limited prison resources. In the wake of compassionate release and commuted sentences for non-violent offenders, we examine the current factors impacting population growth of aging male inmates. We employ gerontology theories and life course perspectives to evaluate prison responses and applicable program offerings for the aging inmate population. We provide guidance for policy creation and/or revision that takes into consideration prison security and limited fiscal resources. Our analyses also provide prison officials with a road map for the future relative to care of and programming for the aging male inmate population.
