About Annual Meeting
The life of a refugee can be both daunting and traumatic. For Arab refugees coming to the United States the transition into American Society is marked by an abundance of difficulties. While observing at HOS, a non-profit in Southern California that services the Arab refugee community, I documented two subthemes: 1) Humor as a means of relating, resemblance, and cohesion in American Society, 2) The culture clash and lack of integration amongst refugees and their families. These subthemes show that contrary to what some may believe that these refugees are struggling to find a place in which they belong in American society. Furthermore, this provides evidence that they are not threats, but they are trying to become a part of the United States society.
