A "Good Faith Effort": Compliance with the Campus SaVE Act

Abstract

The Campus SaVE Act requires that colleges and universities provide sexual assault prevention programming and bystander intervention training. Some campuses are well prepared to meet this mandate, while others struggle to meet the requirements. In the current study, I explore the impact of a university’s “good faith effort” to provide incoming students with sexual assault prevention programming and thus comply with Department of Education standards. Specifically, I examine correlates for scores on readiness for change and how participation in orientation may affect readiness for prevention programming as well as the efficacy of violence prevention, gender violence prevention, and greater willingness to engage in bystander behaviors. In addition, I look at the extent to which prevention messages may generalize to broader community-building actions. Implications for sexual assault prevention best practices are discussed.
