Growing Pains: How Growth Impacts Interpersonal Relationships at Work in Founder-run Firms

Mon, August 22, 2:30 to 4:10pm, TBA

Abstract

How does firm growth impact interpersonal relationships at work within founder-run firms? Using ethnographic observations and interview data, I argue that firm growth has negative impacts on interpersonal relationships at work. These impacts are concentrated among senior staff, or old guard employees, whose relationship to the firm is both personal and professional. This paper illustrates how emotion and intimacy impact economic activity, and sheds light on the persistent finding that senior employees resist organizational change.
