Meaningful Metrics: How Physicians Make use of Data and Metrics in their Everyday Work

Abstract

The widespread use of electronic health records has created a plethora of data available to healthcare organizations and healthcare providers. Organizations and other entities analyze this data to measure improvements in healthcare delivery and quality. However, top healthcare leaders and policy makers have noted a disconnect between many of the metrics used to track and assess improvements in healthcare and the concerns of rank-and-file physicians. Drawing on qualitative data collected over a period of two years, this paper aims to identify and describe some of the ways that physicians engage with and make use of data and metrics, and the extent to which this leads them to modify their clinical behavior. We provide a set of policy recommendations for those who are interested in using data and metrics to drive improvement efforts.
