About Annual Meeting
The world is in transition and embodies a new quality of capitalist crisis, structural violence, white supremacy, patriarchy, ecocide, and struggle from below. The polarization of wealth and poverty, democracy for billionaire capitalists, and fascism for the masses is pervasive. Forces of protest, resistance, and rebellion are rising up. The times demand a revolutionary resolution to the crisis of global capitalism. Sociologists are not outside of the upheaval in society (that we so often study), but are very much impacted by the current crisis and the developing social motion. This is a critical opening for Marxist intellectuals and revolutionaries – from the academy, from working class struggle, and from the streets – to take up this work as organic intellectuals in relation to each other and the larger movement. This roundtable continues a conversation about where are we as Marxists and sociologists in relation to the crisis and the struggle. We ask: How do we better organize ourselves for the tasks ahead around our intellectual and political work? What does struggle on our front of education, scholarship, teaching, and participation in the profession look like? What is our relation to the broad social movement? Whose interests are we aligned with and how? How do we bridge historic divides between the academy, the community, the street – and further divides of race, class, gender, nationality within? How do we participate in the intellectual development of ourselves and the movement as a revolutionary force in society?
