The Career of Historical Social Science: Evidence from Book Reviews, 1900-2008

Sun, August 21, 8:30 to 10:10am, TBA

Abstract

The interdisciplinary project to connect social-science and history has been a key point of articulation between the humanities and social sciences. While there have been a multitude of prescriptive statements about this interdisciplinary relationship, however, there have been few descriptive studies of the history of its history and structure. We seek to fill this gap using a database of over 23,000 reviews of books in history, political science, and sociology journals between 1900 and 2014. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, we unpack these co-review frequencies and present initial evidence on how the same works are reviewed differently by the three disciplines' epistemic cultures.
