On the Cusp of Professional Legitimacy: Occupational Identity and Jurisdiction in the field of Astrology

Abstract

In a field that lacks mainstream scientific credibility, the quest for legitimacy is seemingly infinite. Therefore, examining the professionalization attempts of scientifically marginalized occupational groups offers fertile territory for examining jurisdictional struggles. Using data from in-depth interviews and participant observation, I focus on the collective professionalizing strategies astrologers use to establish an occupational identity and jurisdiction for their work. I explore how although some astrologers attempt to define astrology as a profession, there is not a consensus on the terms of the struggle. Issues related to standards and regulations are key. Therefore, I discuss the influence that conflicts between astrologers about professional organizations, training, credentialing, a knowledge base, and ethics have on the process of professionalization.
