About Annual Meeting
The black lives matter movement has resonated in Brazilian social media circles, a country where police violence kills more in the united states, and where this violence is disproportionately applied to black and poor Brazilians. This paper examines the relationship between race, violence and the state in Brazil and the United States, examining the differences, similarities and inter-relatedness between the two countries. It uses the AmericasBarometer survey to examine variations in experience of victimization, perceptions of insecurity and violence, and beliefs about the role of state institutions to protect against or perpetuate violence, and the relation to democracy. It calls American scholars to look at how black and brown lives matter beyond national borders, and to link the systems of radicalized violent oppression of domestic minorities with that of racialized peoples beyond the border.
