About Annual Meeting
Algorithms, the step-by-step procedures for calculations entrenched in software codes, are omnipresent features of contemporary life. In the first part of this presentation, we briefly outline the key tenets of an emerging sociology of algorithms. In the second part, we introduce a new and significant empirical site for research, namely the cultural, political and economic dimensions of visualization algorithms. Our focus is on a phenomenon we refer to as “deep sight”, rich, multi-tiered visual data streams that situate actors in dynamic, meaning-laden environments. We anticipate that algorithmic visuality will have important consequences on the representation and interpretation of culture more broadly. We also anticipate a broad movement in the social sciences will grapple with the diverse effects of algorithms, and hope our research on deep sight will help guide the way to a truly algorithmic sociology.
