About Annual Meeting
Since the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy, the impact of HIV and AIDS on life expectancy has significantly decreased for those who have access to this treatment. This paper seeks to examine the impact of HIV on life expectancy in New York City (one of the epicenters of the HIV/AIDS epidemic) in 1990, 2000, and 2010. Using abridged period single, multiple decrement, and cause-deleted life tables, I examine the differences in life expectancy between genders and between black and white New Yorkers; I discuss these discrepancies in terms of their implications for differing access to HIV prevention knowledge, testing, and treatment. I discuss how these implications can give insight to a possible rollout of PrEP as an additional tool in the arsenal of HIV prevention.
