091 - Professional Development Workshop. How (and Why) To Do Corporate Research

Sat, August 20, 2:30 to 4:10pm, TBA

Session Submission Type: Workshop

Description

To demonstrate the possibilities for teaching and research afforded by online and publicly accessible databases on firms and industries. It is intended as introductory, but participants will be invited to share experiences and resources.

Three uses and types of material will be illustrated: one associated with the teaching of a stratification course in which students assess the theories of G. William Domhoff and Michael Useem. This uses Boards of Directors as a starting point. A second illustration is an explication of the kinds of material available in Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Forms 10 and 14A and some of the NGO databases that use it. A third example will be a corporate profile intended as a resource for anti-sweatshop NGOs, and illustrating the use of multiple sources (including LexisNexis) and collaboration among faculty, graduate students and undergraduates across different campuses. A list of resources will be distributed and if time permits a brief view of them will be provided. Participants who intend to attend may request digital materials ahead of the meeting.
