About Annual Meeting
Session Submission Type: Invited Session
Consumer social movements have the capacity to not only contest the status quo, but also articulate and enact alternative ‘ways of doing’ consumer markets. The session seeks to ‘change the conversation’ about the role of moral signals in how social movements make claims upon others in order to construct alternative market relations. We aim to move beyond a narrow view of moral sentiments to explore the diversity of motivations through which a more just, collective future might be enacted: sympathy motivated by indignation and compassion, pleasure afforded through propriety and restraint, moral identities affirmed through aesthetics and the pursuit of distinction.
