About Annual Meeting
Session Submission Type: Invited Session
In honor of Barrington Moore's canonical work, this invited panel brings together foundational and new approaches to the research programs Moore initiated, from state autonomy and class analysis to revolution and democratization. For example, whereas Moore and his immediate descendants emphasized the role of social classes in precipitating democratic transitions and expansions, more recent approaches have highlighted the role of other actors, including political parties, the military, and religious institutions. As such the panel speaks to the call of the 2016 annual meeting, since "rethinking social movements" is necessarily, if only in part, a project to rethink Barrington Moore's monumental contribution to the study of contentious politics in the modern world.
