Effective Movement Coalitions for Legislative Changes: A Comparative Analysis of Feminist Legislative Campaigns in South Korea

Sat, August 12, 2:30 to 3:30pm, Palais des congrès de Montréal, Floor: Level 5, 517B

Abstract

This article investigates how movement coalition conditions influence a movement’s political outcomes. I examine eleven feminist legislative campaigns in South Korea to show how social movement coalitions produce political outcomes. My qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) reveals three important findings. First, having a strong coalition hub equipped with three features – “field” expertise, policy expertise, and a professional cadre – is most influential to a coalition’s political success. Second, a set of different coalition conditions, instead of one particular condition, jointly affects the coalition’s political outcomes. Finally, my study shows that a particular form of coalition, a “double layer” of coalition around a hub, increases the chance for a coalition’s political success.
