The concepts of "taste" and "choice" guide much sociological thinking about the art people display in their living spaces. Drawing on interviews within people's homes, I problematize the usefulness of these concepts by suggesting how strongly material constraints and symbolic definitions of the "home" constrain what can be displayed.
