About Annual Meeting
A striking feature of the U.S. cultural and political landscape in the last few years has been the capitulation of patriotism to an unashamed and surging vocabulary of (white) nationalism. Drawing on Stuart Hall’s insight that hegemonic formations are most dangerous at their moment of decline, this talk engages his reflections on nationalisms, racisms, and empires. Decoding dominant nationalism in the U.S., the presentation highlights the relevance of Hall’s contributions for coming to grips with its imperial, racist, sexualized and gendered morphologies and trajectories.
