About Annual Meeting
Teaching race can be challenging in these current political times due to preconceived notions, emotionally charged topics, and socialization. I have found students engaging in active learning to understand concepts and data, some of the emotions that they bring with them to class is removed from the discussion. Students using both quantitative and qualitative data methods in learning activities to draw conclusions about topics through evidenced based research, it helps them to expand their sociological imagination, think more critically, and evaluate information based on actual data. This round table will be a joint sharing of ideas and strategies that have been used to help teaching about race. I will start the round table by sharing some of the different active learning tools I use, both in and out of the classroom, along with ideas for modifications based on population. Topics that will start the conversation will cover the following: residential segregation, hate crimes, police brutality, athletics and race, environmental racism, stereotypes in the media, and what we can do to help heal racism.
