The Myth of Common Oppression: Confronting Contemporary Racism in Feminism and the Role of Emotion-management

Mon, August 13, 10:30am to 12:10pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 5, Salon C

Abstract

My research examines the complexities of interracial interactions in the feminist and equity activist communities among White and Black activists. Racism has evolved from an overt traditional form of racism to a more subtle everyday form. I detail how this subtle color-blind type of racism is embedded in the feminist movement to a detriment for gender and racial liberation. Emotion-management plays a significant role in interracial interactions in activist circles which needs closer examination in order to seek more beneficial collaboration among White and Black feminists/equity activists.
