Turkey and Tamales: Latin American Immigrants and Thanksgiving

Sat, August 11, 10:30 to 11:30am, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 5, Salon G

Abstract

This paper examines the immigrant Hispanic Thanksgiving experience in the U.S. We examine how younger generation immigrant families construct their American Thanksgivings, with a fusion of Latin American culture and American culture. Using qualitative content analysis of Twitter hashtags, we explore meaning-making of this American holiday of food and family. We examined how self-identified Hispanics incorporate their own foodway traditions into mainstream American Thanksgiving traditions.
