About Annual Meeting
Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW) is a social movement that originated on the Internet about ten years ago, and its primary purpose is to encourage society to return to traditional gender roles. In order to accomplish this, they employ a rather unique tactic – they avoid contact with women. This paper draws on content analysis data collected from 40 introduction posts on a popular MGTOW website to understand how these men are recruited into MGTOW and what types of men join MGTOW. The findings of this paper deepen our understanding of online social movement recruitment strategies, and they also help us uncover the ways that individual biography impact an individual’s inclination to join online separatist movements.
