About Annual Meeting
Does intolerance have health consequences? There is very little research on this question. Tolerance levels are determined by both individual-level and structural factors. At the individual-level, feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, depression, and stress likely contribute to tolerance levels. This is important because prior research shows that negative emotions such as anxiety, depression, hostility, and stress are negatively associated with health. There are also structural factors that may influence tolerance levels. Specifically, social capital is positively associated with health. This is the first paper to examine the association between intolerance and self-rated health in the United States. This paper develops a conceptual model linking tolerance levels to health.
