Feeling Race/Racism on Campus: An Ethnography of Black Students at a Historically White Institution

Sat, August 11, 4:30 to 6:10pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 4, 405

Abstract

Research sometimes characterizes campus racial climates as entities or substances separate from students, faculty, and staff. Campus climate, however, is not a “thing”; rather, it is a relation. A campus racial climate is a relationship among faculty and students, activists and campus administrators, students of one racial group and another, and other relations. Findings from this work indicates a) students adopted a racial realist perspective as a way of life and b) the manner in which students experience higher education is also informed by their proximity to and relationships with other students.
