How Do Husbands and Parents Influence the Second Child Planning of Urban Chinese Women?

Sat, August 11, 10:30 to 11:30am, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 5, Salon G

Abstract

The two-child policy launched since 2016 is aimed at mitigating the low fertility issue and population structure issues in China. Since the implementation of the policy, the second child fertility intention attracts both public and academic attentions. Based on a recent fertility survey in six provinces of China in 2016, this research addresses the issue that how husbands and parents/parents-in-law exert influences on women’s second child planning. The major findings are that the fertility intention of husbands, parents and parents-in-law are highly positively associated with women’s second child planning and husbands’ fertility intention is closest to women’s plan to have a second birth. Financial supports from women’s parents and childcare supports from women’s parents-in-law could increase the likelihood of the second birth of women.
