Choosing Segregation: A Descriptive Study of School Choice and Gentrification in Williamburg-Greenpoint

Sat, August 11, 2:30 to 4:10pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 5, Salon G

Abstract

Gentrification is an urban phenomenon which has been studied in New York City neighborhoods since the 1970s. This descriptive study contributes to gentrification and education policy literature by relaying the effects of gentrification on the racial demographics of high schools in the Brooklyn, New York neighborhood of Williamsburg-Greenpoint. Through the collection of data which reflects the changes in housing, racial demographics, and income as well as reviewing gentrification and education policy research, between-school tracking is identified as being promoted through New York City’s school choice policy. Ultimately, findings conclude that school choice policies influence gentrification as well as increased racial segregation in schools.
Keywords: Gentrification, education policy, racial segregation
