About Annual Meeting
In this paper, we address the issue of the genesis and persistence of racial and ethnic stereotypes. Students of race and ethnicity have long studied racial and ethnic stereotypes, and one thing is clear: negative racial and ethnic stereotyping is enduring and persistent. We argue that a major reason for this persistence is the need to reaffirm the legitimacy of white claims of settlement. By continually disparaging racial and ethnic minorities, whites attempt to justify their claims to the land and resources of the US by affirming their superior status in society. We use a Settler Colonial framework to shed light on this process.
