About Annual Meeting
Through a discussion of Wendy Griswold's comparative work on cultural reception and dissemination, I lay out an argument that ultimately Griswold's claim regarding "fabrication of meaning" is better understood as “meaning construction” and that a theory of cultural reception requires a cognitive foundation. I further argue that in particular, any theory of meaning construction must lay out the cognitive frameworks people use to construct meaning, and these must be nothing other than frames, schemas, cultural models, metaphors. In addition, taking inspiration from Edwin Hutchins, I maintain that a meaning construction theory must also provide a convincing account of the “process” through which meanings are constructed, and the most plausible account of such process is the theory of conceptual blending.
