Disaggregation of Asian Educational Achievement by Gender and Class

Mon, August 13, 8:30 to 9:30am, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 5, Salon D

Abstract

In this paper, using PISA data from 2009, 2012, and 2015, we disaggregate educational performance by country, socioeconomic status and gender in order to highlight often overlooked aspects of South East Asian academic achievement. When grouping all Asian performance together and ascribing an image of high achievement we ignore the qualities which make each country unique, as well as the struggles and progress in these nations. We also find that when Asian countries are compared based solely on aggregate test scores, we overlook interesting differences by gender and class that may shed light on progress in seemingly low achieving South East Asian countries. We conclude with a recommendation for comparative research that extends beyond mere geographic proximity to countries outside of Asia with more similar economic and developmental measures.
