About Annual Meeting
The Fragile Families & Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS) is a longitudinal birth cohort study following nearly 5,000 children born in large U.S. cities between 1998 and 2000, with six waves of publically available data for analysis. In early 2018, FFCWS released a sixth wave of data – collected around the children’s 15th birthdays – and in Spring 2018 we will release a new set of metadata resources. This presentation will introduce current and potential data users with the new data available and how to use our metadata resources to support their research.
The Year 15 wave of data is composed of a new teen interview, primary caregiver interview, and home visit measures. These components cover a variety of topics including information on the teen's health and health behavior, education and school experiences, family life and parenting (including residential and non-residential parents), household structure and home environment, caregiver health and behavior, social environment and informal support, housing and programs, neighborhood, and parents’ education, employment and income.
The metadata (release planned spring 2018) will be available for use through a CSV file, an API (along with R and Python packages), and a web interface. These resources will include variable names and labels, response options, variable types, respondent codes, question grouping across waves and interviews, concept tags (ex. health, education), and more. These resources will help data users explore the contents of all six waves of the FFCWS data and will allow for manual searching and/or machine reading.
