Description

Race and emotions are increasingly constructed and mediated by digital technology and technological affordances. This panel considers how race scholarship can theorize, observe, and measure the social construction of race in the digital era. Louise Seamster's paper on algorithmic stratification and race in Social Currents is a groundbreaking paper in this area. Melissa Brown has one of the few empirical studies of race and social media. Jessie Daniels, of course, has several books on race and the Internet. I would also note that in a year when I've been asked to be on a panel about "elitism in sociology", it might be more appropriate to ask why these panelists aren't qualified to present on the subject matter in which they are doing the most immediate research. Of course, I'll understand if the committee goes in another direction.
