1172 - Doing Sociology Beyond University Walls

Over the past many years, sociologists have thought long and hard over how to do public sociology. Still, most of us, irrespective of the quality of our work or possible broader importance, are pretty irrelevant beyond our small-ish scholarly circuits. Our research, earth shattering though it may be, is like that tree falling in the forest. We think, we research, and we write, but few notice. (SAD!) The panelists here -- former editors and current senior managing editor of Contexts, a journalist, a photographer, and a poet (sociologists all) -- will discuss different ways they do their thing to find and communicate with that unicorn we're all looking for -- the informed, general public audience.
