1475 - Disrupted Identities

Sat, August 11, 2:30 to 4:10pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 4, Franklin Hall 11

Session Submission Type: Invited Session

Description

We live in a moment of unprecedented reflexivity. As cultural understandings of race, gender and sexuality evolve, our categories themselves seem transferable and negotiable in novel ways. Some posit these changes as the erosion of long-held categorical systems; others see them as signposts of new, but equally entrenched racial and sexual orders. How are sociologists considering and trying to make sense of the fluidity of identities in the modern world? What new or emerging tools do we bring to identities, categories and self-understandings? Panelists will discuss their work on race, gender and sexuality, with an eye toward capturing the distinctive contribution of sociology tour understandings of contemporary difference.
