Populism is no longer confined to Latin America or to the margins of European or American politics. With the rise of global populism, its relationship with democracy needs to be addressed. Is populism the answer to the deficits of participation and representation of existing democracies? Alternatively, is populism a threat to democracy? This panel will explore the ambiguities of different variants of populism worldwide for democratization. We will distinguish populist critiques toward the establishment and their promises to return power to the people, from their autocratic practices once in government.
