3249 - Caring for the Aging as We Age: Living with and Processing our Experiences as Sociologists

The target audience for this workshop includes sociologists of all ages who are interested in aging and caregiving from personal, research, or policy perspectives. Reflecting the conference theme, we understand that both the aging process and the process of providing care for the aged and infirm are racialized, gendered and emotion-laden. This workshop will provide both research about and stories of caring for aging selves, spouses, and parents and how to analyze and write about these issues and experiences as sociologists. The workshop will allow presenters and the audience to share experiences and to enable sociologists to apply both an auto-ethnographic lens and a sociological imagination to analyze current structural, research, and policy issues related to eldercare and to write about this subject as sociologists for both academic and general audiences. The panel will not have discussants but rather encourage the audience to comment on the research and on their own experiences.
