Session Submission Type: Paper Session 100min
Despite decades of activism on the part of people with disabilities and their allies, equality for people with disabilities remains elusive. The systemic barriers to equality are pervasive and daunting. This session examines a range of systems that may offer opportunities to people with disabilities but too often perpetuate disadvantage. These systems include the family and the ways in which families maximize or stunt the transition to adulthood for young adults with disabilities; special education and the influences of race, class, and social capital in shaping access to effective education; Medicaid and its role supporting community participation while also restricting its users; and the workings of financial markets which confer cumulative advantages to the wealthy and disadvantage people with fewer assets. Across these diverse sectors, people with disabilities face continued challenges to their independence, equality, and empowerment.
