The Role of Criminal Justice Contact in Health Disparities

Abstract

A growing body of interdisciplinary research has begun to link criminal justice contact in its multiple forms to population and health disparities. Sociology plays a critical role in helping to shape our understanding of the role of the carceral state in the creation, maintenance and amplification of health disparities. This presentation will explore how contact with criminal justice system from surveillance and profiling to conditions of confinement and release impact not only those that serve time, but also their families and communities.
