Student Storytelling as a Strategy for Increasing Faculty Cultural Competence: The Case of ‘Failure.’

Tue, August 13, 2:30 to 4:10pm, New York Hilton, Floor: Concourse, Concourse C

Abstract

Storytelling is an underutilized medium for empowering underrepresented students and promoting faculty development. Following a faculty development panel on supporting black and Latinx students which left both attendees and panelists wanting deeper insights into students’ negative experiences of campus culture, we helped students create a video about their experiences. We found that, not only can use of storytelling media deepen perspectives about the student experience, but it can also enable faculty to use our power to better help students exercise theirs (Cook-Sather, 2018).
