Alcohol Use, Dependence and Abuse in Sexual Minority Adults by Sex: Evidence from a National Survey

Sun, August 11, 8:30 to 9:30am, Sheraton New York, Floor: Second Floor, Empire Ballroom East

Abstract

We analyzed the 12-month prevalence of alcohol use, dependence and abuse in sexual minority adults (self-identifying as gay/lesbian or bisexual) by sex and compare findings to those of heterosexuals? Via a nationally-representative survey that included 86,186 participants, sexual minorities reported an increased prevalence of alcohol use, dependence and abuse compared to heterosexuals. This occurred at nearly all ages from 18 through age 57. Sexual minorities have significantly elevated prevalence of alcohol use, dependence and abuse— a disparity that persists through the entire lifespan. Sociological explanations and implications are explored in our discussion.
