Commute Of Power and Oppression: Teaching Intersectionality Across the Curriculum

Abstract

In this workshop, Simone Kolysh, a PhD Candidate in Sociology at the CUNY Graduate Center and Adjunct Instructor in the Women's and Gender Studies Program at Brooklyn College, will provide a visual exercise for teaching intersectionality, paying close attention to the way both identities and inequalities must be part of the conversation. Specific hierarchies that will be addressed include: race and racism, class and classism, gender and sexism, sexuality and heterosexism, ability and ableism, citizenship status and nationalism, education and elitism, and religion and Christian hegemony. Workshop participants will participate in the exercise and leave with a clear understanding of Kimberle Crenshaw's work on intersectionality, definitions of power, privilege, oppression, and discrimination and how to take students through this life-changing exercise.
